TIME FOR NUTRITION IN MEDICAL EDUCATION.
Nutritank’s co-founders, Iain and Ally, collaborated with some amazing people to research and publish this paper, ‘Time for Nutrition in Medical Education’. It exposes the need for nutrition education in UK medical schools by presenting the opinions of both medical students and current doctors. 691 medical students and 162 doctors were interviewed.
Great work @medednutrition @luke__2210 in bringing the data all together!
Medical Students’ Views: medical students were asked about their opinions on the importance of nutrition in disease, health and the role of a doctor. The majority agreed that it plays a crucial role in so many avenues in medicine.
Nutrition Teaching: even though Med-students agree that nutrition is important, the nutrition education in Medical school is often less than 2 hours over the course of the degree!
Junior Doctors’ View: so many doctors don’t talk about nutrition during routine consultations. These results revealed that many feel like the lacked the confidence or knowledge to do so.
Resources to supplement Nutrition teaching: so many medical students have to enhance their nutrition education with external resources. Do you find yourself having to do this?
Is the current nutrition training enough: doctors and medical students believe that the current level of nutrition education is insufficient for them to competently give nutritional advice to patients.
This paper really exposed the need and demand for increased nutrition education in Medicine.

STAYING HEALTHY DURING RAMADAN.
Fasting during Ramadan means abstinence from all food or drink, including water, from dawn to sunset.
Before sunrise, Muslims eat a prefast meal known as Suhoor, and after sundown, Muslims break their fast with Iftar, a meal which usually starts with dates and water or milk, followed by dinner.

HUMANS OF NUTRITANK.
Jackie Wilson @jgwdietetics is an experienced HCPC Registered Dietitian who has worked in the NHS for the last 28 years. She is a facilitator on the Culinary Medicine programme in Bristol Medical School and has worked alongside the Nutritank students in Bristol and Cardiff. She has a specialist clinical role in supporting Type 2 and Type 1 Diabetes patients.
Jackie has her own private Dietetic consultancy specialising in food intolerance and healthy eating for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and has postgraduate training and experience in the Low Fodmap Diet.
She is keen to empower adults with evidenced based nutritional advice providing practical information on meals to suit the individual’s clinical needs, as well as catering for the whole family.

Welcome to our new Instagram series – Humans of Nutritank. Each week we will be posting about one of our supporters/contributors/team. In particular, the next few weeks will have a COVID-19 🦠 spin, appropriate to these surreal times we are living in.
Roy Isworth was born in 1952 (during rationing) and went on to study Medicine 🥼 at Westminster Medical School, qualifying in 1975. He has been a consultant surgeon 👨⚕️ since 1987, and his career has latterly consisted of helping to pioneer laproscopic (keyhole) 🔑 surgery in urology. Since retiring from full-time practice in London, he has been involved in charitable work, and has been the chairman for Tenterden Social Hub (a community social hub and food bank).

Roy describes in his blog on our website, how our attitude to food is evolving during COVID-19, and the impact it is having on Tenterden Social Hub and those around us. He also reflects on his own connection to food during this time. Having lived in post war Britain after years of rationing, his reflection is particularly pertinent.
Roy says: ‘I support everything that Nutritank is doing to educate people with regards to nutrition. It may be that a positive from the current crisis is a reappraisal of our current attitude to food-it’s long overdue’. VITAMIN D.
Vitamin D, together within phosphorus and calcium is crucial as it is required to develop and maintain strong bones, muscle and teeth. Also, a systematic review published by the BMJ in 2017 examining a total of 11,321 participants has shown that vitamin D plays a role in supporting our immune system. .
However, research has shown that a lot of us in the UK are not getting adequate levels of vitamin D. Most of our vitamin D comes from the sun, which we can safely expose ourselves to during these spring months ... just remember that sunscreen! However, if you are self-isolating or do not have access to a balcony or garden within your household, you should consider supplementing yourself with 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily (if you’re an adult or child above the age of 1. .
We can also get some of our vitamin D from certain foods such as salmon, dairy products and red meat. However, as mentioned before, most of our vitamin D comes from sun exposure. Hence supplementation is advised.

Really happy to announce that I am officially Dr Iain Broadley MBChB, BSc! Graduating last Friday - a surreal but cool experience as the graduation was virtual over a conference call with all of my Covid 2020 cohort of classmates whilst sat on my sofa at home with my family. .

This has been a long but incredible journey; with 3 attempts over the years to get into medical school, a 3 year BSc degree, graduating from that then working and now graduating after a 4 year degree at Bristol medical school. .

Here at Nutritank, our primary mission is to connect and empower like-minded people who want to provide more meaningful patient advice by expanding their knowledge of food, nutrition and lifestyle medicine.
However, in light of the current COVID-19 situation, we have decided to divert our efforts at the moment in order to support the wonderful NHS and key workers who we are eternally grateful for.
So what have we been doing to support people during the COVID-19 panademic?
1) We are coordinating the beat covid nutrition section of the junior doctor led The Beat Covid Campaign (see linktree in bio for more info or checkout @beat_covid.
2) As seen in the pictures above we have been collaborating with food brands such as @pret , @no1livingdrinks @thesohosandwichco and @katepercys to act as middle men in ensuring that nutritious products are donated to frontline NHS workers to keep them going.
3) We have set up a facebook page – Healthcare students united against COVID-19 – connecting healthcare students about volunteering opportunities and university responses (see linktree in bio for more info.
4) We have created the social media campaign #togetherevenwhenapart
to promote community wellbeing.

IBS AWARENESS MONTH.
Amongst other things, April marks Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness month. IBS is life-long condition, affecting 7-10% of the global population. Symptoms include diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and stomach cramps.
The aetiology of IBS is poorly understood and is still being researched. However, there have been some recent theories suggesting that the microbiome-gut-brain axis could be responsible. Signalling along this axis is controlled by fibres that run to and from the CNS structures and smooth muscle in the small intestine. These reciprocal fibres mean that there is a feedback loop between the gut and the brain.
Our gut microbiome is a crucial feature of our intestines too. This intestinal lining is where immune responses maintain gut integrity, protecting the lining and ensuring that the microbes can flourish and perform their symbiotic functions.
In IBS, there is a change/imbalance in the microbiome, known as dysbiosis. As the relationship between the gut and the brain is bidirectional, this dysbiosis could impact brain function in relation to the gut-brain axis, altering it. Dysbiosis can be caused by a number of factors, including stress, a high sugar diet, alcohol misuse, GI infections, antibiotic overuse or a high protein diet.
Whilst research on the gut microbiome is still ongoing, studies have noted a degree of dysbiosis in many IBS patients (it actually seems to be a key denominator in many gut disorders) and so there is most likely a correlation there. Scientists are currently working towards defining the mode by which these unhappy microbes could lead to IBS. Once some light has been shed on this, we might be one step closer to finding a cure for IBS.
